ARROYO GRANDE, CALIFORNIA – The City of Arroyo Grande is pleased to announce that free WiFi service is now available at Elm Street Park in Arroyo Grande. This opportunity was made possible through a partnership with PeakWiFi and is being provided to all students in the Lucia Mar Unified School District who are distance learning this school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the decisions of the Lucia Mar Unified School District (LMUSD), Governor Gavin Newsom, and the State Public Health Officer to restrict in-person instruction in the fall, City Council and staff desired to assist families that may not have reliable access to WiFi in order to complete school work. LMUSD estimated that roughly 200 families in the District are without any internet access at home. Some families that do have internet access do not have reliable service with sufficient bandwidth to support online learning.
Understanding this need, south county-based company, PeakWiFi, offered to install and operate a free WiFi service for LMUSD students at Elm Street Park, where students will be able to access reliable internet in an outdoor environment. Thanks to this partnership with PeakWiFi, the free service is now up and running for the start of the school year.
The system will be password protected and operational between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. only. Physical distancing and other COVID-19 restrictions are to be followed while using the service. The success of the program will depend upon the extent to which the service is used safely, including adherence to COVID-19 precautions.
Information regarding this opportunity will be distributed to families within the LMUSD this week.
