[ARCHIVED] Lift Station No. 1 Force Main Replacement Project to Begin in July

On May 14, 2019, the City Council approved a contract with Lyles Utility Construction, LLC for the Lift Station No. 1 Force Main Replacement project. Lyles Utility Construction, LLC, under contract with the City of Arroyo Grande, will be replacing approximately 3,500 linear feet of 8-inch sewer force main under West Branch Street during the months of July through October 2019. The area of replacement will be from approximately Oak Park Boulevard to Rancho Parkway as shown on the location map.

A force main is a pressurized sewer pipe that conveys wastewater in a situation where gravity sewage flow is not possible. The force main being replaced conveys approximately 17% of the City’s total wastewater flow. It was constructed in 1973 and in the past has experienced breaks indicating it has reached the end of its useful life.

This force main will be replaced using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) techniques, one of the most common methods used for installing pipelines underground without digging open trenches. This will help minimize traffic impacts during construction.

During construction it is anticipated that traffic will be shifted into the travel lanes away from the construction area for safety purposes and that no full roadway closures will occur. Access to all driveways will be maintained throughout construction.

Normal work hours will be between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. However, these hours may be extended or modified under certain conditions such as some night time work that is required when wastewater flows are low. The contractor will place changeable message signs (CMS) at each end of project which will display construction dates, hours that lane closures can be expected and contractor contact information.

The force main replacement may cause temporary inconveniences because of the nature of the work. The City appreciates your patience during this period and will attempt to minimize the inconvenience. Please contact the Public Works Department at (805) 473-5460 if you have any special needs or concerns that should be taken into consideration during construction. If you have specific questions about the project, please call Jill McPeek, Capital Improvement Project Manager at (805) 473-5444. The City will also have a contract inspector on site to address concerns.
