In January, the City Council renamed the Elm Street Community Center to the Mark M. Millis Community Center. The City is honoring Mr. Millis at a Public Dedication and Renaming Ceremony on Friday, June 7th at 3:30 PM.
Mark M. Millis has been serving the community of Arroyo Grande since 1972 when he began serving on the City Council. Over 18 years, he made significant contributions to effect positive changes and improvements to the City. He served on the City Council from 1972-1980, serving the last 2 years of his term as the appointed Mayor. He was elected as Council Member again from 1980-1984 and 1986-1988, before running for and being elected as Mayor in 1988. He served two terms as directly elected Mayor through 1992. He also served on various boards and advisory committees, aiding as a leading proponent of parks and recreation, and recognizing the importance of family participation in recreational activities in creating lasting relationships within our community.
Mr. Millis was also a School Board Member and Arroyo Grande High School teacher.
The ceremony will take place at the Community Center and Recreation Services Department facility at 1221 Ash Street in Arroyo Grande. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
