At its regular meeting on January 8, 2019, the City Council voted unanimously to appoint Lan George to the Arroyo Grande City Council to fill the seat left vacant by former Council Member Caren Ray Russom when she was elected as Mayor in the November 6, 2018 General Municipal Election.
The Council considered five applicants who provided a statement of qualifications and the three most important issues facing the City from their perspective. Applicants then responded to a series of questions from the Council. Council Members and the public commented on the quality of candidates that applied for the position, all of which have varying years of service to the community.
Ms. George has served the City of Arroyo Grande and the greater community in a variety of volunteer capacities over the years. Ms. George served on the Planning Commission for 4 years including serving as the Chair for 2 years. Prior to her appointment on the Planning Commission, Ms. George also served on the City’s Architectural Review Committee. In the greater community, Ms. George volunteered for the Lucia Mar Unified School District as a parent and special event volunteer at Ocean View Elementary and a Boosters Board Member at Arroyo Grande High School. Ms. George has also served as a Five Cities Girls Softball Board Member, has participated in park cleanup and beautification efforts, was a Girl Scout Leader from 2008-2011 during which time she was the Red Cross “Operation Give to Kids” Director; and served as an Annual Strawberry Festival event Chair from 2005-2011.
Ms. George was sworn in and seated on the City Council at the January 8, 2019 meeting and her term will run through December 2020.
