The cities of Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, and Arroyo Grande have previously approved an agreement solidifying the partnership for Central Coast Blue, a regional recycled water project that will provide a new, drought-resilient, water supply for the Five Cities community. Central Coast Blue is the first new water supply for the region in over 20 years. Drought conditions and water supply challenges across the state demonstrate the urgent need to provide a new, and sustainable water source to ensure that South County continues to thrive. The commitment and leadership by the three cities over a decade ago will serve generations for Five Cities families and businesses.

Central Coast Blue has been a multi-agency effort between the three cities and the South San Luis Obispo County Sanitation District. The goal of Central Coast Blue has been to enhance water supply reliability by injecting advanced purified water into the Santa Maria Groundwater Basin.

Reliability is achieved through the creation of a seawater intrusion barrier and supplementing the naturally occurring groundwater in the basin.

Recently, Central Coast Blue received a $14.1 million grant from the federal government under a Bureau of Reclamation Title XVI grant, with more grants funding potentially becoming available.
